Blackout is a serious game aimed toward improving innovative problem-solving skills in adults.
Inspired by the massive blackout in India in 2012 that affected hundreds of thousands of people, Blackout challenges the players to think like a consultant to the city mayor and solve this problem as effectively as possible.
This game is part of a research project studying how serious games can foster problem-solving skills in a player. Our research findings show that when a serious game is intentionally created through a learning theory and real case study, it brings up the safety-driven motivation and nurtures the immersive engagement. These factors are crucial in fostering innovative problem-solving skills. Furthermore, research shows that students are appreciative of Blackout’s relevance to real-world problem solving challenges.
Blackout demonstrates the transformative potential of serious games in higher education.
